Speculation for the upcoming Star Wars movie has grown since the announcement that Disney had taken over the franchise. One of the more consistent rumors mentions the return of the original trilogy characters Luke, Leia, and Han; however, there is also speculation that the protagonist for the next movie could be a woman.
The original trilogy followed the story of Luke Skywalker while the newer prequels focused on Anakin Skywalker; both male characters. A recent post by however Slashfilm.com suggested that the protagonist could be a woman. The publication released an article on updates for the franchise that included a small blurb at the end stating "Finally, Peter said we should put this tweet of his in this article but he couldn't say anymore."
The corresponding tweet said the following, "Who said the lead character in Star Wars Episode VII is going to be a male star? :)" Slashfilm interpreted the comment as referring to a female main character in the upcoming Star Wars movie though it did mention the possibility that the tweet could simply mean that the lead character will not be a star actor. Movieline speculated that the use of the word "male" was extremely telling.
"Episode 7" will be released in the summer of 2015. The screenplay will be written by Michael Arndt but there is currently no director attached to the project.
