Police are investigating an incident involving the Kardashian family in which someone placed a 911 call and falsely reported an emergency occurring in a Malibu home where the Kardashians occupied in the past.
Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said that it is too soon to determine if the Kardashians are the most recent victims in a prank that has become known as "swatting."
The prank's goal is to get the police department to respond to a home emergency with SWAT, or special weapons and tactics, teams.
Police units responded to the call on Friday but found no one in the Malibu home where the Kardashians used to live. After they found out that the house was empty, they contacted the Kardashians and traveled about 20-miles to their home in Hidden Hills, according to Whitmore. Police found that no crimes were committee and no arrests were made.
"Just got a call from my mom telling me about this prank call that someone was shot in their home & 15 swat team & 3 helicopters showed up!" Kim Kardashian posted on her Twitter page.
Kim later expressed how upset she was over what happened.
"The pranks are NOT funny! People can get arrested for this! I hope they find out who is behind this. It's dangerous & not a joke!" she posted.
Whitmore said that sheriff's officials and other California law enforcement agencies pledge to lobby state lawmakers to make this kind of prank a felony.
"What we want to do is have the legislature turn up heat on these people," Whitmore said. "This is a serious, serious crime."
A 12-year-old boy was arrested in December 2012 for carrying out a similar prank on celebrities Justin Bieber and Ashton Kutcher.
