On Saturday, "Silver Linings Playbook" actress Jennifer Lawrence hosted the first episode of Saturday Night Live for the New Year. The 22-year-old actress, who recently took home the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy award at the Golden Globes, received mixed reactions to her participation in the sketch-comedy show.

Lawrence opened up the show with a pretty funny opening monologue where she trashed fellow Oscar nominees for the Best Actress category, while also complimenting their acting. The actress delivered perfectly but did cause some to wonder whether her sarcastic humor was a bit much.

As in the episode’s promo, Lawrence reprised her role as Katniss Everdeen from her hit action movie “The Hunger Games.” Along with Taran Killam (who took over Josh Hutcherson’s character of Peeta Mellark) and Bill Hader (portraying Seneca Crane), Lawrence took questions during a fake post-Hunger Games press conference. The skit had plenty of potential but ultimately fell short.

One of the few skits that Lawrence received some fan praise from was her performance in “Danielle: A Free European Woman.” The skit, which saw the actress take up the lead role of Danielle, even drew a handful of chuckles from the crowd.

Lawrence’s best performance on Saturday was her performance in “50s Diner,” where she played a mean waitress known for her slightly deranged comments. The 22-year-old executed the role amazingly and could not have done a better job.

The night’s most bizarre skit was “Top Dog Chef,” which had Lawrence and several cast regulars act as dogs in a “Top Chef” competition. The skit was not only a bit odd but also not very funny.

Overall: There was so much potential for Lawrence to do an amazing job hosting and performing at 'SNL' for the first time, but she was not given the right material to do so. The normally hilarious actress should have been given better material to work with and will hopefully return in the future with funnier skits to perform in. Overall, it was a weak start to 2013 and the show will hopefully redeem itself this Saturday, with host Adam Levine and guest performer Kendrick Lamar.
