The Golden Globes have announced their nominations for the 2013 award ceremony and the race for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television includes several strong actress, who could each walk away with an award.
Nicole Kidman: Hemingway & Gellhorn: The Hawaiian-born Australian actress is nominated for her first Golden Globe in a television category for her role as Martha Gellhorn in the TV film Hemingway & Gellhorn. A seasoned TV and big screen actress, Kidman has performed in a number hit films including Moulin Rouge! (2001), The Golden Compass (2007) and The Paperboy (2012). She has been nominated for a number of awards including two Academy Awards (2002 and 2011), two BAFTA Awards (1996 and 2002), one Primetime Emmy (2012) and seven Screen Actors Guild Awards (2002, 2003, 2010, 2011 and 2013). Kidman has also won many awards, some local and other international, such as one Oscar (2002), one BAFTA Award (2003) and a Star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood (2003). She has been nominated for seven Golden Globes-including two this year alone-and has won three (1996, 2002 and 2003). Given her outstanding work and past awards, it would be no surprise if Kidman walked away with at least one Golden Globe in January.
Jessica Lange: American Horror Story: Asylum: The American actress stars in the hit TV mini-series American Horror Story: Asylum as Sister Jude Martin/Constance Langdon. Lange, 63, is a veteran film and TV actress, playing roles in films such as Tootsie (1982), Big Fish (2003) and most recently, The Vow (2012). She has been nominated for numerous awards, including four Academy Awards (1983, 1985, 1986 and 1990), one BAFTA Award (1984), two Primetime Emmys (1996 and 2003) and three Screen Actors Guild Awards (1995, 2010 and 2013). Lange has also won several awards, including one Oscar (1995), two Primetime Emmys (2009 and 2012), one SAG Award (2012), as well as several local and international awards. The career actress has been nominated for the Golden Globes eight times (including one in 2013) and has won five times (1977, 1983, 1995, 1996 and 2012). Like the rest of the nominees in this category, Lange has a real shot at winning the 2013 Golden Globe.
Sienna Miller: The Girl: The New York City-born British actress stars in the TV film The Girl as Tippi Hedren, a Hollywood actress who had a relationship with famed filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock. Miller, 31, has starred in films, but is best known for her roles in Casanova (2005), Factory Girl (2006) and Stardust (2007). She has been nominated for several awards in Great Britain, including BAFTA Rising Star Award (2008), a British Independent Film Award (2008), an Empire Award UK (2005) and a London Critics Circle Film Award (2008). This is her first Golden Globes nomination and she faces fierce competition from the other nominees in this category. Despite being a first time nominee, Miller's The Girl has received three nominations this year for the Golden Globes and may provide the push for her win.
Julianne Moore: Game Change: The American actress wowed in her recent performance as Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor who ran as Republican presidential candidate John McCain's running mate in 2008, in the HBO film Game Change. A seasoned film and TV actress, Moore, 52, is best known for her performances in The Big Lebowski (1998), Magnolia (1999) and Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011). Due to her extensive career, Moore has been nominated for several awards, including three Academy Awards (1998, 2000 and 2003), three BAFTA Film Awards (2000, 2003 and 2011), and eleven Screen Actors Guild Awards (1998, 2000, 2003, 2011 and 2013). She has won a Daytime Emmy Award (1988) and a GLAAD Media Award (2004), along with a number of local and international awards. Moore has been nominated for seven Golden Globes and won one in 1994 for Best Ensemble Cast for Short Cuts. Moore is a definite frontrunner for this year's Golden Globe award.
Sigourney Weaver: Political Animals: The American actress stars in the TV mini-series Political Animals as Elaine Barrish. Weaver, a veteran actress, has starred in a multitude of films for TV and the big screen. She is best known for her roles in Aliens (1986), Avatar (2009) and Abduction (2011). Her list of nominations includes two Academy Awards (1987 and 1989), two BAFTA Awards (1980 and 1990), two Primetime Emmy Awards (1998 and 2009) and three Screen Actors Guild Awards. Weaver has won numerous awards, including a BAFTA Film Award (1998) and a Star on the Walk of Fame (1999). She has been nominated for five Golden Globes and has won two Golden Globes in 1989. Like most of the seasoned actresses in this category, Weaver has a strong chance of taking the Golden Globe.
Prediction: This year's crop of nominees for this category is a strong one that could result in a number of results. The award could be a tossup between Game Change's Julianne Moore and Hemingway & Gellhorn's Nicole Kidman. With several awards in her name, and the buzz surrounding Game Change, Julianne Moore is my pick for this year's winner. American Horror Story: Asylum's Jessica Lange is also one to watch.
