Samsung is preparing for the Galaxy Note 2 launch in New York City, where it could compete against fellow Samsung device, Galaxy S3.
The New York City event is set for Oct. 24 and while the features for the "phablet" has been known since its August debut at IFA 2012 in Berlin, the prices are still under speculation.
The term "phablet" has been thrown around referring to the Galaxy Note 2. The word is a mix of phone and tablet. Samsung has said the Note 2 is too big to be considered a phone but too small to be considered a tablet.
Since it has features as a mobile phone, how does it compare to fellow Samsung device, the Galaxy S3?
One obvious difference is the display and screen sizes, except the pixel resolution.
The measurement of the display for the Galaxy S3 is a length of 136.6mm, width of 70.6mm, and a depth of 8.6mm. The screen size is measured in 4.8-inches with a pixel resolution of 1,280x720 with a 306 pixels per inch (ppi).
The Galaxy Note 2 is measured with a longer length of 151.1mm, 80.5 width, and a depth of 9.4mm. The screen is measured at a larger 5.5 inches, but the same pixel resolution and a lower ppi of 267.
Both devices feature the Super AMOLED HD display and corning gorilla glass 2 protection.
The Galaxy Note 2 weighs more at 183g to the Galaxy S3's 133g.
The two Galaxy devices offer the same internal memory storage of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. However, the Galaxy S3 offers 1GB of RAM while the Galaxy Note 2 comes with 2GB of RAM. The devices do offer a microSD card slot up to 64GB.
For the wireless connectivity, it will be the same. The two devices offer Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth version 4.0, and Near Field Communication (NFC).
The cameras are also similar.
The primary camera, also known as the front-facing camera, of both devices have eight-megapixels with 3,264x2,448 pixels. Video for the rear-facing camera can has 1080p and record at 30 frames per second (fps)
The secondary camera, or the front-facing camera, has 1.9-megapizels and can record at 720p and up to 30fps.
A difference is the operating system. If you previously purchased the Galaxy S3, then the device has the Android version 4.0.4, or the Ice Cream Sandwich. The Galaxy Note 2 has the latest Android version 4.1.1, or Jelly Bean operating system.
However, Ice Cream Sandwich users can upgrade their devices to the Jelly Bean.
The Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 have the same chipset, the Exynos 4412 Quad. For the CPU, both use the quad-core Cortex-A9, but the Galaxy S3 uses 1.4GHz while the Galaxy Note 2 uses 1.6GHz.
The battery power is in favor of the Galaxy Note 2. The Galaxy S3 has a standard battery, Li-Ion 2,100 mAh. When it comes to standby time, for 3G users, it can withstand up to 790 hours and 11 hours and 40 minutes for talk time.
The Galaxy Note 2 also has a standard battery, Li-Ion, but at 3,100 mAh. For 3G users, standby time can go up to 890 hours while talk time goes up to 16 hours when fully charged.
As for colors, the Galaxy Note 2 offers gray and white, while the Galaxy S3 offers blue, black, brown, gray, red, and white.
As for carriers, the Galaxy S3 is available for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, and US Cellular. For the Galaxy Note 2, they too will be available with the five before mentioned carriers.
Prices for the Galaxy S3 start at $199.99 for the 16GB, $249.99 for the 32GB.
The Galaxy Note 2 price are unconfirmed, however, US Cellular have already began taking preorders for the 16GB variant for $299.99 when signing a two-year contract, that is $100 more than the 16GB of the Galaxy S3. Although just speculation, one could see the Galaxy Note 2 could cost $100 more than the Galaxy S3, perhaps meaning the 32GB of the Galaxy Note 2 will cost $349.99.
