Nokia is preparing to release their latest Lumia series in November, just as the holiday season approaches.
The two latest Lumia devices, the 920 and 820, could rival against Apple's iPhone 5 and Samsung's Galaxy S3.
This time around, Latinos Post will focus on the Lumia 820 smartphone, a device with specifications much smaller compared to the 920 model.
What are the specifications and what do terms such as resolution, Snapdragon, camera, and networks mean?
Display/Screen Size (AMOLED): The Lumia 820 has a height of 123.8 millimeters (mm) and a width of 68.5mm. Its weight stands at 160 grams (g) with a thickness of 9.9mm.
The screen measures at 4.5-inches and in used AMOLED display. AMOLED is short for Active-matrix organic light-emitting diode. According to GSM Arena, the AMOLED consumes "significantly less power."
Screen Resolution: The resolution of the screen is will be 800x488 with about 217 ppi (pixels per inch).
The resolution indicates the number of dots per inch (DPI). The higher the DPI, then the higher the resolution, for example, the Lumia 820 stands at 800x488 resolution, then there are 390,400 dots per square inch. This also means the device will be capable of displaying 800 distinctive dots, or pixels, on each of the 488 lines.
Memory (GB/RAM): The device will be will have an internal memory storage of 8GB and 1 GB RAM, according to GSM Arena.
A GB is known as a gigabyte, and one-gigabyte hold up to 1,024 megabytes. If it will offer 8GB, then it equals to 8,192 megabytes. The term "byte" is actually an abbreviation for "binary term," and is a unit of storage.
A RAM, short for Random Access Memory, is the most common type of computer memory found in devices.
The smartphone will also have a microSD (Secure Digital) card slot, for up to 32GB of extra storage.
Networks (3G/4G LTE): The Nokia Lumia 820 will be available in 2G, 3G, and 4G LTE networks.
According to Webopedia, the terms are from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), an intergovernmental organization that develops telecommunications. This organization is even recognized as a United Nations agency back in 1947.
3G is an ITU specification, and it stands for third generation. With 3G, the bandwidth is increased to 384 kilobits per second (kbps), which measures data transfer speeds.
4G is the fourth generation and enables data and streaming multimedia at higher speeds. The Long Term Evolution, or LTE, was developed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) that helps provides an increase of speeds up to 10 times more compared to 3G networks.
Battery Capacity (Standby/Talk Time Hours): The battery capacity for the Lumia 820 is 1,650 mAh.
Short for Milliampere-hour, mAh indicates how batteries are rated for capacity power. According to Webopedia, the higher the mAh, then the stronger and healthier the battery of the device.
Due to the battery capacity, standby and talk time improves when the mAh is higher.
Standby time in 2G and 3G will be 330 hours, when using the device post-charging. Talk time hours are different between 2G and 3G, with the former having up 14 hours while 3G drops to eight hours.
Camera (megapixels): The rear-facing camera (meaning the camera on the back of the device) has eight-megapixels with a resolution of 3,264x2,448.
The front-facing camera has Video Graphics Array, or VGA. It is considered as one of the resolution standards for images, videos, and displays, according to GSM Arena. VIGA has a 640x480 resolution.
A megapixel means one million pixels. A pixel is short for "picture element" and is a single point in a graphic image. The quality of the pixels varies on the display's resolution.
Operating System: Also known as OS, the Lumia 820 will use Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 as its operating system. The OS controls all basic operations of the device.
Processor (CPU): The processor is considered as the brains of the device and the most important element of the smartphone.
The processor will be the Snapdragon S4 with a dual-core 1.5 gigahertz (GHz). One GHz represents 1 billion cycles per second.
In regards to Snapdragon, Qualcomm refers it as the "Best-in-class performance that can run the most demanding applications, including 1080p HD videos, visually intensive 3D games and video, as well as High-Definition video conferencing."
Wireless Connectivity (Bluetooth/Near Field Communication): The Lumia 820, according to Nokia, features Wi-Fi, the Bluetooth 3.1 and will have Near Field Communication (NFC). However, according to WMPoweruser, the device has been certified for the latest Bluetooth 4.0 version.
Bluetooth is a wireless protocol for exchanging data over short distances from fixed and mobile devices, creating personal area networks.
NFC is a standards-based short-range wireless connectivity that helps the collaboration of similar devices that are in short-range.
Colors: The Lumia 820 will come in seven colors: black, blue, gray, purple, red, yellow, and white.
What comes with the Lumia 820?
When purchasing the device, it will come with the Nokia AC-50 MicroUSB Charger, Battery BP-5T 1,650 mAh, Nokia Headset WH-208, Charging and Data Cable CA-190CD, and a user guide.
