oscars 2013
Oscar night is finally here and the world will finally have the answers to a number of questions such as: Will Argo Win Best Picture despite the Best Director snub of Ben Affleck? Will Jennifer Lawrence or Jessica Chastain be actress of the year? Or will 86-year old Emmanuelle Riva surprise them with a historic victory as the oldest actress to win? Will Anne Hathaway win her first Oscar? Will Daniel Day-Lewis score his third?
The biggest television event of Hollywood takes place tonight when the Academy Awards are presented on ABC.
On Feb. 9 the Academy Awards presented the Scientific Tech awards. Due to their low profile, these awards will be mentioned during the official Oscar broadcast.
One of the most unique aspects of the Oscar show is the presenters. With the entirety of Hollywood attending the ceremony, it is always interesting to see who will show up. This year promises to showcase a varied batch of stars.
U.S. authorities at Los Angeles International Airport briefly detained Emad Burnat, the first Palestinian filmmaker nominated for an Oscar, after questioning the validity of his Academy Awards invitation, his publicist told reporters on Wednesday.
The Best Actor Category is by far one of the easiest races to predict this year. One actor has swept virtually every award leaving no room for surprises. Past winners in this category are Jean Dujardin (The Artist), Colin Firth (The King's Speech), Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), Sean Penn (Milk), and Daniel Day Lewis (There Will be Blood).
The Best Director category is the most puzzling race in years. The category is usually settled once the Directors Guild of America hands out their award. However this year Ben Affleck who won the esteemed prize was not nominated for the Academy Award. It marked the sixth time that a director won the DGA but did not win the Oscar. The last time a director won the DGA without being nominated for the Oscar was in 1995 when Ron Howard won for his film "Apollo 13." Recent Oscar winners are Michel Hazanavicius, Tom Hooper, Kathryn Bigelow, Danny Boyle, and Joel and Ethan Cohen.
The Best Supporting Actress race has long been defined since the precursor awards began this year. The nominees feature two winners and three past nominees. Past winners include Octavia Spencer (The Help), Melissa Leo (The Fighter), Monique (Precious), Penelope Cruz (Vicky Christina Barcelona) and Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton).
The highly anticipating film “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” is set to resume filming in Hawaii later this month following the Oscars, lead actress Jennifer Lawrence confirmed during an interview at the Academy Awards Nominee Luncheon last week. Fellow “Catching Fire” cast member Sam Claflin also confirmed that he’d be heading back to Hawaii for resumed filming.
The Best Original Score category is by far one of the most unpredictable categories in the Oscar race. This year the race for Score has been one of the trickiest to follow as critics' and awards organizations have not agreed on the same movie. The Oscars generally award the prize to a Best Picture nominee and this year three out the five scores are in the running for Best Picture. Past winners include Ludovic Bource (The Artist), Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Social Network), Michael Giacchino (Up), A.R Rahman, and Dario Marianelli (Atonement).
"Silver Linings Playbook" has emerged as one of the favorites to win the Oscar after receiving eight nominations.
On Feb. 10 "Argo" went home with the Best Film award at the British Academy Awards.
The Best Editing category is one of the most crucial awards at the Academy Awards. No film in recent history has ever won the Best Picture without getting nominated for the category; however, the Best Picture is not necessarily always the winner. Therefore the five films nominated this year are most likely the ones with the biggest chances to win the ultimate prize. Recent winners include "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "The Social Network," "The Hurt Locker" and "Slumdog Millionaire."
The Academy Awards producers have announced that Dame Shirley Bassey will perform at the Oscars. Additionally they have announced that "The Avengers" stars Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo and Samuel L. Jackson will present.
The Best Actress race has always been one of the most contentious categories in Oscar history as there are usually two front runners in the race. In 2012 Meryl Streep and Viola Davis split the critics and awards organizations and in 2010 Meryl Streep battled with Sandra Bullock. Other examples include the 2009 contest between Meryl Streep and Kate Winslet and the 2008 race featuring Marion Cotillard and Julie Christie. The ultimate winner was always the actress portraying a real life person or the winner of the BAFTA award. This year, three actresses have split pundits, critics' circles, and awards ceremonies.
