Ice-Free Summers in the Arctic Coming Sooner Than Previously Expected

Last year the ice in the Arctic shrank to the lowest level in recorded history. While it looks like that record won't be broken this summer, a period where there is literally no ice in the Arctic isn't that far off. In fact, it's likely to happen sooner than previously expected, according to NASA glaciologists.

Study: Arctic May Be Ice-Free By 2050 or Before

Scientists at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) have unveiled data showing that Arctic Sea ice cover melted to its minimum extent for 2012 on September 16th. At 1.32 million square miles, this summer's ice cover minimum is the lowest on record.
