Steve McQueen was heckled at the New York Film Critics awards ceremony.

When the "12 Years a Slave" director went up to receive his award for Best Director, critic Armond White interrupted and began insulting McQueen. White shouted, "You're an embarrassing doorman and garbage man. [Expletive] you. Kiss my [Expletive]."

It was not clear whether McQueen heard the comments or simply ignored them because he kept speaking.

The news comes as no surprise. White has verbally abused other actors and directors before. In 2011, White hosted the ceremony and took verbal jabs at the winning performances from Annette Bening and Michelle Williams. Later in 2012, he jeered at Robert DeNiro and Viola Davis as they were speaking on stage.

White has become one of the most controversial film critics, he is a well-known contrarian among movie critics. This year, he has bashed such critically-acclaimed movies as "Gravity," "Blue Jasmine" and "Captain Phillips." His most despised film this year, however, seemed to be McQueen's "12 Years a Slave."

"Steve McQueen's post-racial art games and taste for cruelty play into cultural chaos. The story in '12 Years a Slave' didn't need to be filmed this way and I wish I never saw it," wrote White in his review of the film.

The critic compared the film to "Hostel" and "The Human Centipede," both known for their "torture porn."

"That's right, '12 Years a Slave' belongs to the torture porn genre with 'Hostel,' 'The Human Centipede' and the 'Saw' franchise but it is being sold (and mistaken) as part of the recent spate of movies that pretend 'a conversation about race,'" wrote White.

McQueen's "12 Years a Slave' is one of the best reviewed films of the year and has received a number of accolades for best picture. The film is currently the front-runner to win the Oscar and is nominated for seven Golden Globes.
