On Tuesday, Real Madrid faces off against Valencia in the first leg of the Copa Del Rey quarter finals. The team's recent form is a reason for concern, but the major story coming out of the Bernabeau surrounds the goalkeeping controversy.
Coach Jose Mourinho has not yet stated which of his two keepers he will turn to on Tuesday. He recently told reporters, "He (Iker Casillas) did the job of a goalkeeper in a big team. He hardly touched the ball here, but he was part of the team's defensive play." He added, "It is too early to say whether he will play against Valencia."
Backup keeper Antonio Adan will be finished with his suspension and will be available if Mourinho chooses to utilize him. The Portuguese manager recently stated that Adan was in better form than Casillas and earned a start in late December against fourth place Malaga. The omission of Casillas created a stir with the fans who booed Mourinho in the ensuing match against Real Sociedad. In that match Adan got a red card and Casillas was inserted to replace him. The captain gave up three goals in that match but shut out Celta Vigo in the following Copa Del Rey match. He also shut out Osasuna this weekend, but his team failed to score a single goal as well.
