Despite the release of the iPhone 5 by Apple, it is Samsung’s Galaxy S3 smartphone that is being produced more.

The IHS reported on the cellphone manufacturing for 2012 and show Samsung shipping 28 percent of the global smartphones, eight percent more than Apple’s 20 percent.

The percentages are an increase for both companies, however it is Samsung that showed significant gains compared to 2011.

The 2011 report had Samsung accounting for 20 percent of the world’s smartphones shipped, an eight perfect difference now in 2012.

In regards to Apple, it is a one percent gain compared to 2011. Last year, Apple accounted for 19 percent of the mobile devices shipped worldwide.

The 2012 numbers provides better news for Samsung fans as it dethrones Nokia as the world’s top cellphone manufacturer.

Nokia, based from Finland, took the top spot since 1998 but has gone down to number two, bowing down to South Korea’s Samsung.

Overall, smartphone shipments increased 35.5 percent more than 2011, yet overall cellphone shipments increased by one percent.

"The competitive reality of the cellphone market in 2012 was 'live by the smartphone; die by the smartphone,'" said IHS Senior Analyst for Wireless Communications Wayne Lamt IHS. "Smartphones represent the fastest-growing segment of the cellphone market -- and will account for nearly half of all wireless handset shipments for all of 2012. Samsung's successes and Nokia's struggles this year were determined entirely by the two companies' divergent fortunes in the smartphone sector."
