Today, Samsung announced the Galaxy Grand on its official blog, signaling the debut of the company's first 5" display.
Sitting comfortably between the Galaxy S3's 4.8" screen and the 5.5" Note II, the new device will run on Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean) and sport a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. The device also features 1GB of RAM, 8GB of user memory, Bluetooth 4.0, an accelerometer, a gyroscopic sensor, and a digital compass. A 2-megapixel front camera and an 8-megapixel rear camera adorn gadget as well. The South Korean company promises "zero shutter-lag and ultra-quick camera start-up" in addition to Full HD video recording.
The Grand will make use of S Voice, AllShare Play, Popup Video, Smart Alert, and Direct Call.
Samsung will initially only release a dual SIM model of the phone at launch, but a single SIM version will roll out shortly after. Dual SIM entails that your phone can manage two separate phone numbers at once.
Comparatively, the Galaxy Note II ships with a 1.6GHz quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and a 1.9-megapixel front camera. The Galaxy S3 is powered by an Exynos 4 quad-core processor, 1024MB RAM, and shares the same cameras as the Note.
As Samsung's latest experiment in the search for a perfect screen size, it will be fascinating how the tech mogul will market the device. Not quite a traditional smartphone, nor a "phablet," the Grand may usher in a new line of 5" phones if it digs its hooks into consumers' wallets.
