The nominations for this year's Oscar awards has just been announced, revealing that a Latino director and a film from Colombia managed to garner nods from the esteemed award-giving body.

With that, Latinos have something to applaud in the wake of the announcement.

"Filmmakers Alejandro G. Iñarritu and Emmanuel Lubezki continued their hot streak at the Academy Awards with two more nominations," Fox News Latino said, noting that the pair had won Oscars last year - best director and best cinematography for "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)."

This year, it appears the duo is set to repeat the feat with their encore in the 2016 edition, this time with the Leonardo DiCaprio starrer "The Revenant," which earned 12 nods.

Meanwhile, Colombia figured in the best foreign film category with Ciro Guerra's "Embrace of the Serpent" - a first for the country. This nomination did not go unnoticed by Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, who shared the trailer for the movie via a tweet.
