If a guy like Conor McGregor can make it happen, there will certainly be exceptions to a rule. From the looks of it, UFC president Dana White is leaning on that angle if “The Notorious” does plan to move up to the lightweight division.
McGregor is without question one of the big stars in the UFC these days, highlighted by that 13-second knockout win over long-time champion Jose Aldo.
The thing is though, McGregor seems to want more than just reign in the featherweight division as he tinkers with the idea of moving up to the lightweight.
Under normal circumstances, there are complications. Traditionally, moving up a weight would require the champion to vacate the belt but it seems White doesn’t see that happening. In fact, he doesn’t see it as necessary.
With that in mind, could McGregor reign on two different UFC divisions? White believes that if there is anyone who can make that happen, McGregor can.
If so, it will be another achievement to his end, not to mention another first for the UFC by possibly becoming the first fighter to hold two titles simultaneously as mentioned via MMA Junkie.
"Conor has said that he would like to win the 155-pound belt and fight four times a year and defend both belts," White said via MMA Fighting. "If anybody can do it, Conor McGregor can. This guy has pretty done everything he said he would do. I'm interested."
If that should be the case, McGregor could likely be on course to face Rafael dos Anjos, the UFC lightweight champion. As early as December, dos Ajos made it clear that he is ready and waiting for the Irishman.
"He's a featherweight, and I'm a lightweight. But, he's saying he wants to come to the lightweight division, if he comes I will be here," says dos Anjos in a separate article from MMA Fighting.
With that looming, where does such leave Frankie Edgar?
Edgar is angling for his title shot but as mentioned in an article yesterday, he may have to wait and see what the UFC decides to do first. Edgar has started to belch out trash talks of his own in what seems to be a tactic to get the goat of McGregor.
The Irishman has yet to address Edgar and his rants but even if he obliges, the final word on what lies next for “The Notorious” lies in the hands of the UFC top brass.
