Outside of the Apple iPod and Microsoft Surface tablet universe, Amazon's Kindle Fire HD has a lot to offer.

Unlike the iPod and Surface tablets, the Kindle Fire HD runs on the Android mobile operating system, providing different apps that iTunes or Windows Phone doesn't offer.

What apps are currently receiving the best reviews on Amazon?

Calorie Counter and Diet Tracker by MyFitnessPal: Price - Free

The app has been featured on NBC, USA Today, Marie Clair, and CNET, to name a few, and it provides tools to help get in shape and lose weight.

"This fast and easy-to-use calorie counter lets you keep track of your diet even while you're on the move," states MyFitnessPal. "Make use of the comprehensive database that includes over 590,000 foods and a speedy search function for exercises and take off those extra pounds in a hurry."

The app allows users to track their weight, goals, charts on progress, add nutrient information based on calories, protein, sugar, fibers, and cholesterol, to name a few.

One reviewer stated, "This app has helped me where I've failed so often before. It makes it so easy to track what you are eating. I am then sometimes surprised at what I've thought was healthy in the past, finding it those things really high in calories. Good Luck. This is a great tool to success!"

Reddit is fun: Price - Free

Developed by TalkLittle, the Reddit is fun app allows users to see what's going on in the Reddit universe, from what's "Hot," "New," and allows you to save what you find.

Users are able to share and comments on articles posted by fellow Redditors

A reviewer wrote, "My daughter introduced reddit to me when I was visiting her. I didn't pay too much attention to it. A couple of nights later I was looking for something different to do and decided to download reddit. I was mainly wondering what she liked about it. Best app ever! Couldn't put it down. I especially like to read 'ask reddit' questions. Warning: You'll get addicted."

Amazon also provides a free "Test Drive" of the app, meaning you can use the app on your computer for a certain amount of time before giving the option of buying it - it's free.

The Free Dictionary: Price - Free

Developed by Farlex, The Free Dictionary is exactly what it stands for, it's a dictionary.

The app provides users extensive definitions, pronunciations, how it's used in sentences, translation to languages such as Spanish, French, Italian, German, Arabic, Chinese, and Russian, to name a few, and use the thesaurus.

In addition, games are provided such as Spelling Bee, Words within Words, and Hangman.

One reviewer wrote, "This dictionary has a good layout, reasonably-sized text, and gives you access to a wealth of content. All of the dictionary apps I've tried have their quirks, but this one is pretty straightforward. Nicely done. It does work well on a large screen (e.g., the Fire's 7-inch)."

Battery HD: Price - Free

Developed by smallte.ch, it is described as "the perfect battery monitor for your phone or tablet. It is simple, beautiful and can be calibrated specially for your device."

The Battery HD app gives users the opportunity to know how many hours they have left in listening to music, watching videos, talking, internet browsing, GPS navigation, camera use, and time left to recharge.

Similar to Reddit is fun, Amazon provides users to "Test Drive" Battery HD prior to installing it.

A reviewer wrote, "I can't imagine using my kindle fire without Battery HD. It changes keeping up the charge from a mildly annoying chore to a source of geeky entertainment. Straightforward and easy to use with useful statistics, it's a must-have app."

Tiny Flashlight + LED: Price - Free

Developed by Noklay Anaiev, the app turns your device into a flashlight.

"Tiny Flashlight + LED uses your device's camera LED to display a variety of different lights," described Anaiev. "If your device doesn't have an LED, Tiny Flashlight uses your Android device's screen light. Designed to work on a wide variety of devices, Tiny Flashlight is one of the most versatile flashlight applications on the market."

Users can be creative and choose the different type of lights, from light bulb, traffic signal, police lights, and change the background color entirely while the app is on.

A "Test Drive" is provided to users prior to installing the app, if they wish to do so.

A reviewer wrote, "I love it. It's a great little light, [SOS] function is practical. The strobe is fun. The cop lights .......whatever. This is great if you are a boater with the addition of the red ambient light."

Christmas Puzzle: JigSaw: Price - Free

In time for the Christmas season, Jinner developed a jigsaw themed Christmas puzzle.

The app allows users to drag puzzle pieces in order to recreate an image, plus, the level of the puzzles increase as you advance. Users are also given the option to save the puzzle as wallpaper.

A reviewer wrote, "This is a puzzle game for most all ages. I love that my oldest (2nd grade) can solve the puzzles, and that the puzzles, as they progress, are also challenging enough to peak my interest. The images used aren't super cheesy, which is an added bonus!"
