January 1, 2016 is New Year's Day, the only day - other than Christmas - when the entire country seems to have time off.

Given that Jan. 1 landed on Friday this year, employers may have been lenient in granting workers a three-day weekend, meaning just about everyone can get a head start on those New Year's resolutions they promise to finally get around to. The problem is, most government buildings and financial institutions are closed.

Banks aren't open, post offices won't be delivering mail, and the department of motor vehicles - which seems to be open less and less these days - will shut its doors, along with other government-funded services.

Most retailers, restaurants, and grocers, however, will be open for business. Here's a look at some notable retailers that will either be open or closed on Friday, along with their hours of operation.
