Video game developer Ubisoft is taking another plunge into movies as it takes its "Assassin's Creed' franchise from the consoles to the big screen.

According to Screen Rant, the film is currently being filmed in Spain and is set to star Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class series) as Aguilar, a high-ranking member of the Assassin group that thrived back in ancient times.

The twist of the story is that Fassbender will also be playing the role of Callum Lynch, who is living in the present. Lynch is actually the descendant of Aguilar and has been targeted by the ancient enemies of the Assassins, the Knight Templars.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the film will be basing a lot of the story from the video games, including how Lynch will be accessing his ancestor's memories and traits.

For those who have not played the games, the memories of the Assassin ancestors can be accessed through a genetic descendant of the particular assassin through a machine called the Animus.

While the character of Lynch is a made for the films character, he does closely resemble the character of Desmond from the games, while the character of Aguillar closely resembles Desmond's ancestors Altair and Ezio.

However, when asked about the games, Fassbender admits that he never played them before being offered the role. The actor does admit though that he has since started to play them to get the idea of the physicality of the character and stories.

Fassbender also admits that once learning about the movement and fighting style of the Assassins group, he needed to brush up on his parkour and close combat fighting. While admittedly not an expert at parkour, the actor does state he can do many of the basic moves and some advanced ones now.

Movies based on video games have not always been the easiest to make as many have been box office flops, as Ubisoft should know by now.

The video game developer took another one of its successful franchises, "Prince of Persia", to the big screen back in 2010, and while the movie did well in the box office, it did not rate well among movie critics.

Director Justin Kurzel (Macbeth) will have his hands full if he wants to secure that the content of the film is good enough for the loyal fans of the franchise.

"Assassin's Creed" is set to debut on Dec. 21, 2016.
