"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" may still be far from its theater release, but fans have already come up with several theories about the highly anticipated film, particularly who Peter Quill/Star Lord's father is going to be.
While the real identity of Star Lord's father remains a mystery in the cinematic universe, it is not so in the comics (he is J'Son of Spartax in the comics). Casting has started on who will play the big role in "Guardians of the Galaxy 2."
Now, word around the rumor mill is that veteran Kurt Russell is one of the actors the studio is looking at, and he has a high chance of getting the role of Peter Quill's father.
During this year's "Furious 7" and the upcoming "The Hateful Eight," Russell reportedly received positive feedback. The 64-year-old actor also played several iconic geek characters during the '80s, such as Snake Plissken in "Escape from New York" and Jack Burton in "Big Trouble in Little China," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
As such, it doesn't really come as a surprise if director James Gunn's first choice is Russell in playing Peter Quill's dad in "Guardians of the Galaxy 2," as reported by The Wrap.
Reports claim meetings with Russell are to take place soon. The veteran actor has not yet read the script or was reported to be offered the role officially, but if he does become a part of the "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" cast, he will reportedly be the second new addition to the sequel, with the first new cast member being actress Pom Klementieff. She is expected to take on the role of new "Guardians" team member Mantis.
With that said, even if Russel's role in the film is unknown, he is undoubtedly a perfect fit for the "Guardians of the Galaxy 2."
As noted by Cinema Blend, if Peter Quill's old man is written as a comical character, Russell will have no difficulty pulling off a Peter Quill kind of humor, which could even become one of the highlights of the highly anticipated film.
In addition, since Russell is already known in the industry, playing Star Lord's father makes sense. Moreover, if the character happens to be a villain, it would be exciting to see Russell play the supporting character.
Cinema Blend reported that after all the "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" rumors regarding Star Lord's father, one thing is for sure, and it is that the character is a "member of an ancient alien race" which "the Nova Corps "had never seen before." Peter's mother Meredith also described him as an "angel," while Yondu called him a "jackass."
"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" is slated for release on May 5, 2017, while production is set to take place early next year.
