Pepsi announced Tuesday that it's bringing Crystal Pepsi back, but with a twist.
"Soda buffs can enter a chance to win their own six-pack of the low-sodium, caffeine-free product of the early 1990s through a sweepstakes on Pepsipass.com," Time said. "The limited-time giveaway runs from Thursday to Friday."
Lucky recipients of the collectible of a beverage will be chosen next week and deliveries will be done around Christmas time. Only 13,000 six packs will be given away.
"The set-up benefits customers who already use the Pepsi Pass, since they must have 1,000 points to enter," Adweek noted. "You can score points by entering a promotional code or by "hanging out with friends who also have Pepsi Pass, referring friends or by visiting Pepsi Pass locations."
"PepsiCo first introduced Crystal Pepsi in 1992 to test markets in Denver, Sacramento, Dallas, and Providence; evidently they did well enough to warrant a full release, with the product hitting stores nationwide in 1993," Bustle recalled. "Having got wind of the trend, Coca-Cola decided they wanted in on the action, too, launching a clear version of Tab cola in December of 1992."
Unfortunately for the company, the massive hype and marketing efforts pumped into the promotion of Crystal Pepsi back in 1993 did not pay off as the sales surge dropped pretty quickly after the launch. By the end of the year, the product was pulled out.
Looks like PepsiCo learned its lesson as it has relaunched the Crystal Pepsi on a limited release arrangement.
"Why did Crystal Pepsi only last from 1992 to 1993, you ask? Excellent question. The answer is quite simple: it didn't taste good," The Verge pointed out, echoing the sentiments of the drink's creator, David Novak.
"I still think it's the best idea I ever had, and the worst executed," Novak qas quoted as saying in a previous interview. "People were saying we should stop and address some issues along the way, and they were right."
"It would have been nice if I'd made sure the product tasted good," he went on. "Once you have a great idea and you blow it, you don't get a chance to resurrect it."
Apparently, the second chance has come.
The relaunching of the 90s-era beverage was heralded by an ad that featured a janitor who accidentally stumbled on a floor in his office that still partied with Crystal Pepsi. Check out the clip below and tell us what you think!
