Messi: Messi's week got off to a poor start when he was injured against Benfica in Barcelona's final match of the Champions League group stage. However, he was back in the gym the following day and proceeded to score a brace against Real Betis on Sunday that not only maintained Barcelona's brilliant start, but also propelled him past Gerd Müller as the greatest goal scorer in a single year. Now he has 86 goals in a calendar year and with three matches remaining, he has tied Cristiano Ronaldo's record of 23 goals in the first half of the Spanish League.
Ronaldo: Portugal's favored son got off to a tremendous start this week as Real Madrid won their UCL match against Ajax Amsterdam 4-1. Ronaldo scored a goal and notched an assist. He played well in the ensuing match on Sunday against Valladolid but failed to register any points in Madrid's 3-2 win. He did however create a great deal of opportunities.
