In their first interview since the terrorist attacks in Paris, California-based rock band Eagles of Death Metal described their horrific ordeal at the Bataclan theatre and praised the heroes that saved countless lives.
"The gunfire got closer. It went on for, you know, ten, fifteen minutes, it just didn't stop. And then it would stop and there was this sense of relief and then it would start up again." Bassist Matt McJunkins said in speaking with Vice founder Shane Smith. "And then there was an explosion that just shook the whole room, probably the whole building."
The band scattered backstage once one of the gunman began to reload. Jesse Hughes, the band's lead singer, could locate his partner, prompting the band and its crew members to take a peek outside their hiding place.
"That's when I saw the shooter," Hughes said. "And he turned on me, brought his gun down and the barrel hit the door frame and I was like oh, f***."
Band co-founder Josh Homme said Eagles of Death Metal plan to finish the European tour and encouraged other bands to cover their single "I Love You All the Time" so proceeds can be raised for the victims.
Hughes added he cannot wait to go back to Paris and hoped they would be the first band scheduled when the Bataclan re-opens.
"Our friends went there to see rock and roll and died. I want to go back and live," Hughes said.
