Ronda Rousey made headlines again, but this time, for a different reason, thanks to Holly Holm. Let's get to know the woman who beat the previously undefeated top female MMA fighter.
She's A Champion Boxer
"The 5'8" southpaw had won nearly every legitimate women's boxing title in her welterweight class before moving over to mixed martial arts," Mashable noted.
She's Also an Undefeated MMA Fighter
Although Holm was Saturday night's underdog, her previous sporting achievements and 9-0 record in her UFC fighting career made her an able and fitting opponent for Rousey. In fact, even the latter acknowledged she's a dangerous opponent.
"She's a 19-time boxing world champion with 100 percent takedown defense and head-kick knockouts," Rousey said in an interview last month, as noted by Mashable. "I mean ... she's undefeated and an amazing athlete, the biggest threat definitely to me. Especially on paper and stylistically. She's the type of fighter you have to be very patient with."
According to MailOnline, "72 per cent of her (Holm) hits were on target, compared to Rousey's 30 per cent, and she landed 38 strikes on her."
She's Married
Holm may be dedicated to sports, but she's not too busy to set aside time for relationships. In fact, she's married to fellow New Mexico native, Jeff Kirkpatrick, who "currently works as the president at AAA Co." and "studied finance and accounting at the University of New Mexico and graduated in 2002," Heavy said. They've been married since 2012.
She's a Preacher's Daughter
Holm is also known as "The Preacher's Daughter" because, obviously, she is. Her dad Roger, who was present the night his daughter beat Rousey, is a preacher for Edgewood Church of Christ in the Bosque Farms area where the former boxer and her siblings grew up.
Apparently, the elder Holm is supportive of his daughter's sporting pursuits, despite the risks involved.
"I've always told Holly two things. I said, 'No. 1, I'm behind you if you want to quit tomorrow.' But if she wants to keep fighting, that's fine. It's living," he said, as quoted by MailOnline.
She Started with Aerobics
"I started aerobics to keep in shape, saw the [kickboxing] class, thought it looked pretty cool, so I thought I'd try it for one fight and see what it was like," Holm said via her site.
One thing led to another - now she's just conquered the best female fighter in the UFC and has copped the bantamweight championship title.
