After years and years of research, the pyramids of Giza still have secrets left for archeologists to discover.
Recently, a team of international researchers detected something in the pyramids that they have not recorded before, leading to speculations of secret tombs and still unknown treasures hidden within the massive landmarks.
"Scans on the pyramids of Giza, on the outskirts of Cairo, have found 'several thermal anomalies,' which may be explained by 'voids behind the surface,'" CNN reported. "The investigation has found one 'particularly impressive' anomaly at the Khufu pyramid -- the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing and the largest Pyramid ever built."
According to Egyptian antiquities officials, the probable cause of the abnormally warm portions of the Great Pyramid may be "the existence of empty areas inside the pyramid, internal air currents, or the use of different building materials," the BBC noted.
Scientists and architects from France, Japan, Canada, and even Egypt had used infrared thermography to scan the pyramids in an attempt to detect hidden chambers within the ancient structures. After two weeks, they determined anomalies in the edifice.
Regarding the remarkable anomaly found at the base of the Great Pyramid, on its eastern side, the first row of its stones reportedly are uniform but has a difference in formation, with three stones registering temperatures higher than those around them.
"Other thermal anomalies were detected in the upper half of the Great Pyramid," the BBC added.
In the wake of these findings, the Antiquities Minister of Egypt, Mamdouh el-Damaty, encouraged Egyptologists to "join in the research and help come up with ideas on what could be behind the anomalies," The Washington Post said.
The next phase of the project will involve 3D modeling and simulations of the Giza area. The information that has been collected will continue to be analyzed and studied.
The pyramids, which are in the the outskirts of Cairo, is one of the most significant tourist attractions of the nation. They are used as burial markers, with the ones at Giza built in the 4th dynasty of the Egyptian Pharoahs. The Khufu pyramid is the only structure among the seven wonders of the ancient world that has survived the ravages of time and development.
There have been previous research made of the Great Pyramid, with one in 2011 involving the use of micro cameras, which were able to penetrate deep into the pyramid and revealed hieroglyphs that may be clues to why the edifice had secret chambers, tunnels, and doors.
