The Samsung Galaxy View is out now, boasting an 18-inch screen and portability - it seems like a binge watchers dream come true.
Screen & Resolution
However, there are pros and cons to the extra-large portable screen.
With an 18.4-inch screen and 1080p display the Samsung tablet was made for lazy days. The screen is large and provides a great amount of clarity to watch movies or play video games. However, The Verge advises if the tablet-like device is to be used primarily as a tiny television, "video from apps like Netflix and Sling TV looks acceptable. But up close, pixels are plainly apparent."
TechRadar had a similar review saying, "The pixel count is OK, as it's going to be sharper than most of the TVs that grace our living rooms."
Handle
The Verge also explains the gigantic tablet comes with a built-in handle - which could become a nuisance. However, there is also a kickstand attached to the handle, which allows the user to stand the table up-right or watch it comfortable on their lap in a horizontal position.
Weight & Icons
The table weighs 5 pounds, so users will need to keep that in mind if they plan to schlep the mini-television to and fro.
Once the tablet is started, the landing page is a custom home screen with popular video-apps like Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube and TV-based news apps like, ESPN and CBS all-access. Other TV apps based on the users cable provider can be downloaded, but they will not be accessible through the home screen.
TechRadar was unimpressed by the overall display of the icons on-screen. "The icons all looks large and jagged, the video playback is uninspiring and it doesn't look like there's a Super AMOLED screen on offer here. In short, it feels very much like a budget tablet that's been supersized and had a kickstand bolted onto the back."
Pricing
The Verge and TechRadar believe the product seems more for a niche audience. At a price of $599, The Verge speculates the Galaxy View could find ore "niche" success at a lower price of about $300 or $400.
However, a few more pros to note are an 8-hour battery life and a microSD card slot for users to watch their own videos.
