The Wii U has ushered in the new generation of consoles, but its next competitors seem to be taking away a great deal of spotlight.
The Playstation 4 has been nothing more than suspicion as of late, but concrete details are starting to arise. According to a report from Dual pixel, the next Sony Playstation 4 will not go by that title but will instead be called the Omni.
"Omni will be "very capable" of doing modern day graphics compared to a Direct X 11 level of technology like Unreal Engine 4 and Frostbite 2," the publication asserts, but the system will not be the major leap forward over the Wii U in terms of graphical power.
One major feature of the new system will be the "Omniviewer" which is a head mounted autosteroptic display "that can track the users head and presents a 360 image view with semi transparent AMOLED screens." With this device users need only turn on a TV to receive augmented reality information from this device. The report also indicates that one of the real life applications of this device is that it will let users see movies in 2K, 4K, or even IMAX resolutions depending on their original size. The device will presumably be able to sync with the Vita handheld and will include new controllers that will include pulse sensors in the grips for "biofeedback gameplay."
The report also indicates that there will be two SKUs if the system. A 160 gigabyte version that includes the system and controller will ship for $350-$400 while the one with the Omni-viewer and game will sell for closer to $500. The launch is planned for September 2013.
Among the known first party titles for the new console are a new Uncharted, a new Siren, The Boydguard, Wipeout Omni, Bump In the Night, Killzone 4, Gran Turismo Prologue, a new Media Molecule, Omni Fitness.
Finally those hoping for a new clouding service will be supposedly treated to OmniCloud which will cloud stream titles from the PS1,PS2, and PS3 to Playstation Certified devices. Users will also be able to purchase direct hardware Backwards Compatibility for around $70 - $99 for a piece of hardware that is contains a PS3 on a chip with Cell to run games. This piece of hardware can be plugged into the Omni.
