Sinaloa drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman suffered leg and face injuries evading police after he was cornered at a remote Mexican hideaway, according to a statement made by Mexican officials on Friday.
Neither the severity of injuries nor his whereabouts following the confrontation in the country's Sierra Madre mountain range are known. Aside from what government officials stated, the only other tidbit comes from three sources telling NBC that Guzman's cover was blown by an intercepted cell phone signal.
"El Chapo" has been on the run since escaping from a maximum security jail on July 11. Social media users turned amateur detectives believed they found Guzman soon after via one of his son's Twitter posts.
On Aug. 31, an individual named Alfredo Guzman posted a now-deleted picture with two unidentified men whose faces were blocked by emoticons. The caption read, "Comfortable here you already know with who."
Twitter users have taken cynical tones to news of "El Chapo's" most recent escape. Some questioned the Mexican government's account of his injury while others lightheartedly wondered how this will affect their fantasy football team.
A ver si mañana no resulta que este es el nuevo look de #ElChapo después del chingazo que se metió,todo puede pasar
