MLS Week 35 Preview, TV Schedule, Live Stream
MLS returns with penultimate week of regular season action.
For fans of US soccer it will probably come as some grateful rest bite from national team matters, as the MLS returns with its penultimate week of action.
The hunt for the final illusive playoff spots is getting serious with the majority of teams still in with a chance of joining Toronto FC, LA Galaxy, Seattle Sounders,Vancouver Whitecaps, FC Dallas and the New York Red Bulls in the post season draw.
Only the Vancouver Whitecaps and Sporting Kansas City have played 33 matches and this weekend's fixtures could go along way to determining who goes through to compete for the right to be named MLS Cup Champion.
In order to clinch the final spaces on offer in each conference, we run down the scenarios that need to occur in order for the the final few places to be filled. Here we preview the final few storylines that are reaching their climactic end this weekend.
In the Eastern Conference, the Red Bulls can clinch the top spot if they are able to defeat Philadelphia on Sunday. The victory would mathematically wrap up the Supporters Shield for the Red Bulls and be a great morale booster going into the post season.
For DC United, having ensured their playoff spot will host Chicago Fire in the hope of retaining their second seed and avoid the dangers of the knockout round. DC would fancy their chances against a seemingly weak Chicago side who are now without hope of making the playoffs.
The Montreal Impact will continue their end of season charge to the playoffs against the New England Revolution and if they can defeat the Revolution they could still be in line for a second place finish in the east.
For Orlando City an exciting an extremely positive first season in the MLS will hinge on their final two results. The only possible way for Orlando to make the post season is to win both of their final two matches and hope that other results go in their favor. Expect drama as they take on fellow new boys New York City who though out of contention of a playoff place will want to end their season on a high.
The Portland Timbers are managing to find the results when they count. They are going into their final few matches having found form at the right time. Wednesday's win in Utah was certainly fortunate if nothing else, but they keep their hopes alive for a post season placing.
On Monday the picture for final playoff places will look clearer heading into the final round of matches, but this weekend could go a long way to sealing places and ending hopes.
