All is quiet on the end of Floyd Mayweather Jr. ever since his last match against Andre Berto last September 12 in Las Vegas. Mayweather, as expected, won the fight via unanimous decision and despite apprehensions from the boxing world, the undefeated American remains that he is officially retired.
Though his last fight was hardly impressive as far as pay-per-view numbers is concerned, not too many believe that it was the last we have seen of Floyd Jr. Just a couple of days ago, his name was mentioned (erroneously?) in a report by AFP through Yahoo Sports that his camp is in talks with Manny Pacquiao for a possible rematch in 2016.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum was quick to negate that report saying that the report could be a result of a language barrier though he is not aware of how good the said reporter’s English is.
"There's been no negotiations, no discussion and because of the scheduling I don't think its possible for it even to happen" says Arum via TMZ Sports.
He further adds that while he respects Mayweather’s decision to retire, it is unlikely that he would even consider fighting in the Gulf.
With that settled, Mayweather’s name is not totally off the boxing headlines. This time around a rumor claims that Mayweather could be returning to the ring but against Adrien Broner in 2016.
Word about the possible match came about when Ring TV reporter Michael Woods alleged that an anonymous source tipped him that Mayweather is planning a comeback and that it will be against Broner.
He further adds that the fight could be lucrative since Broner does use a fighting style similar to what the undefeated American has.
With that said, all these are simply rumors and unless Floyd Mayweather comes out in the open and says so, such cannot be taken seriously.
Mayweather seems to have everything he has right now so it may take more than money to get him out of his claimed retirement. Though he has equaled the 49-0 record of boxing great Rocky Marciano, not too many people approve of how he achieved it, capped by the fact he chose a less-heralded opponent in Berto.
As far as Pacquiao is concerned, Amir Khan seems to be the top candidate to face off Pacquiao in his return and possibly last match by early 2016.
He claims that his shoulder is 80 to 90 percent healed and may announce his opponent either by November or December.
