"The X-Files" revival season premiere airs on Jan. 24, almost 14 years after the last season aired on TV. But fans who have attended the New York Comic Com on Saturday, Oct. 10, have seen the kick-off episode three months ahead.
The Los Angeles Times had the tidbits of the most awaited opening episode. Spoilers ahead: It begins with a strange spacecraft landing in a desert in 1947. Fox Mulder (David Duchnovy) no longer works for the FBI and had been residing in a country in total isolation. Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) on the other hand is working as a surgeon at a hospital. The two have broken up.
Scully and Mulder are compelled to reconnect to meet with, social media sensation, Sept. 11 "Truther" and alien conspiracy theorist Tad O'Malley (Joel McHale). Together, the three will meet up with a woman who claimed that she had been abducted by aliens.
Just when it can be assumed that the rest of "The X-Files" revival season will be dwelling on alien mythology, the opening episode takes a different turn and presents the overall theme of the series -- the post 9/11 conspiracy theories. Mulder now believes that aliens are just planted to deceive people and take the attention away from the real threat.
According to the Los Angeles Times, "The X-Files" revival premiere episode hints at the whole season being politically charged. President Barack Obama and George Bush were in fact shown in the episode.
During a Q&A session with IGN at the Comic Con, show creator Chris Carter said the revival season will be structured in this manner: "A mythology episode and then we're going to do standalone episodes for the next four. And then we bookend it with mythology episodes at the end of the season too."
As for the romantic angle between Scully and Mulder, Carter said he had "consciously" made the ex-lovers to be living separate lives. He explained that this is how the two, with all their differences, will end up realistically.
Duchovny, on the other hand, was teasing when asked whether there will be more of "The X-Files" after the revival season. "Chris has the lion's share of the work. We work hard, but Chris really, it's a bigger time commitment [for him]. I'm just grateful to all you guys to let us come back and play these characters again. If there's an appetite for more, then as we say in the show, you have my number," the actor said.
