Sam Smith's "Spectre" Bond Song "Writing's On The Wall" has finally been released but unfortunately received by mixed reviews.
In an interview with TODAY's Natalie Morales, Smith expressed how excited he was to be tapped to create an epic number for the iconic brand. "I just wanted to write a love song-something classic...Timeless," the "Stay With Me" crooner said. In an interview with BBC Radio One's Nick Grimshaw he revealed he had written the track less than a half-hour. "It's the quickest I've ever written a song - it took 20 minutes and they loved it! I love the song so much." Impressive yes, however the masses seem to wish he took a bit longer.
With lyrics like, "I've been here before / But always hit the floor / I've spent a lifetime running / And I always get away/ But with you I'm feeling something that makes me want to stay," Bond fans are tweeting mixed reviews about the song all together, either asking for better lyrics, more orchestral composition, a bigger climax, or all of the above.
@CharlieKing85 "Congratulations âª@samsmithworld âª#writingsonthewall is everything and more that a 'Bond' song should be!! âª#spectre"
@AngrySalmond "Anyone who has listened to âª#WritingsOnTheWall is allowed to take the rest of the day off. Go home, rest and heal up. You've suffered enough."
@DavidSchneider " 'The name is Bland. James Bland.' âª#writingsonthewall âª#SamSmith"
@doodleoodle "Actually quite disappointed with âª#writingsonthewall It could have gotten so big and used Sam's incredible voice so much more :("
@KPComeau "Awesome and classic Bond sounding orchestra in âª#WritingsOnTheWall, but Sam Smiths vocals/lyrics... Blah. James Blah."
While others are accusing the British singer of ripping the musical build from the King of Pop's "Earth Song." Honestly, the two tracks seems blend pretty well together.
@MikeJayM "Is anyone else just hearing "Earth Song" by Michael Jackson? âª#writingsonthewall"
@JonnyBorrows "Has anyone noticed that the new bond song âª#writingsonthewall is actually The Earth Song by Michael Jackson?"
BBC Radio One who interestingly enough had Sam Smith premiere the track on their radio station, actually released a mash-up of the two songs via Twitter with an apologetic message, "Bond vs Earth Song. You made us do this. Sorry Sam. #WritingsOnTheWall."
