A doll, whose Instagram account goes by the name Socality Barbie, is taking the social media platform by storm. Dubbed "Hipster Barbie" by her 135,000 Instagram followers, her beautiful photos were taken amidst the picturesque view of Portland and many other places of adventure.
Hipster Barbie has a photo in which she makes the famous "jumpshot" at the beach. She also has many shots of her feet, multiple filtered snaps of cups of coffee, and photos of her outfits for the day, which commonly include a backpacker bag and boots. She also has a snapshot of her camera, which she supposedly used to take all of her photos.
The description and the theme of her photos may sound and look familiar to many. According to the woman behind Socality Barbie, this is because Hipster Barbie is "so relatable" and "either your Instagram looks just like hers or you know at least one person whose Instagram does."
According to WIRED, the person behind the Instagram account is a wedding photographer from Portland who wants her identity to remain a secret. She told WIRED she wants to preserve the authenticity of Socality Barbie.
The woman revealed that she created the Instagram account three months ago with the sole intention of making fun of all the people who use the hashtags #liveauthentic and #socality. The photos were parody pics after all.
"People were all taking the same pictures in the same places and using the same captions. I couldn't tell any of their pictures apart so I thought, 'What better way to make my point than with a mass-produced doll?'" the anonymous woman said.
The woman said people are fond of taking pictures of the mountains and beaches as they share the common feeling of "getting away from it all." However, at the end of the day, these pictures may be "pretty to look at" but "they are dishonest."
"Nobody actually lives like this. And it's so overdone that it's becoming boring," she said.
The woman has no intention of revealing her true identity in the near future. Speaking with Portland's KGW, she said she "chose to remain anonymous because it's more fun that way, for me and for the followers." Staying anonymous, she believes, is the secret behind Socality Barbie's success.
"I believe it makes her seem like she's a real person and it's entertaining to watch people try and figure out who's behind the account," she told KGW. She also refused to divulge her identity with the Huffington Post, saying she is "just some nobody who lives in Portland, Orgeon."
