Similar to what Marvel Studios has done in the past, DC Comic Studios has already revealed their plans for the first "phase" of their movies. With that being said, the schedule does not have information on a release date for a sequel of the Superman franchise.

According to Den of Geek, as late as last month, rumors were making the rounds through the internet that "Mad Max: Fury Road" director George Miller was being tapped to direct the next installment of the Superman franchise. However, that rumor has been debunked, and now it seems that "Man of Steel 2" is on indefinite hold.

This is the second DC film that Miller has been attached to in recent years. The Mad Max director was set to direct a Justice League movie entitled "Justice League Mortal" way back in 2007 but the movie was ultimately shut down due the Writers Guild Strike.

Reasons on why such a high-profile character like Superman would have his solo movie put on hold have started to come to the surface. According to Master Herald, one such reason is that DC comics would want to feature the other members of the Justice League before putting the spotlight back on Superman.

Another reason could be that considering that the last two movies of Superman did not do as well as expected in the box office, executives at DC are waiting to see how "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice" does before committing to another Superman movie.

The absence of Superman on the big screen does leave room for other DC superheroes to have their movies showcased. One hero who has seen a lot more time on screen is that of Batman. The Dark Knight is already locked in to make a cameo in the "Suicide Squad" movie, as well as at least two solo movies, not including the upcoming Justice League movie.

The other founding members of the Justice League, namely, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman and Martian Manhunter are all set to either have their own solo movie or debut soon on screen.

Fans of Superman shouldn't be worried though as the character is set to be in "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice" as well as in "Justice League Part 1", and is bound to make other cameos as the DC comics movie universe unfolds. Actor Henry Cavill is set to portray Superman in the foreseeable  future.
