The fifth episode of 'Vampire Diaries' season four kicked off with menacing vampire hunter Connor Jordan (Todd Williams) escaping from Klaus' (Joseph Morgan) captivity by decapitating his hybrid watcher. The ambitious hunter wastes no time in setting a plan in motion to kidnap Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) and luring in Mystic Falls' many vampires.
Before taking Jeremy, Matt (Zach Roerig) and April (Grace Phillips) hostage, Connor pays a visit to Professor Shane (David Alpay), the same professor that took over for Bonnie's (Kat Graham) grams' college course on witches. The twosome have an agreement, which Bonnie is unknowingly a part of, where Connor kills vampires to complete his tattoo map and Shane helps him interpret it once it is finished.
After Connor and Shane discuss their plan, the vampire hunter heads to the Grill where an unsuspecting Jeremy, Matt and April become bait in his plan to get the Salvatore brothers and company. In order to do that, Connor texts Stefan (Paul Wesley), Damon (Ian Somerhaler) and Tyler (Michael Trevino) about the hostage situation before smashing Jeremy's phone and setting up some vampire-killing bombs around the Grill.
Over at the Salvatores, Damon, Elena (Nina Dobrev), Tyler and Caroline (Candice Accola) prepare to ambush the Grill and save their hostage friends. Damon's plan? "The plan is that I'm going to rip Connor's heart out, However, their plan is halted when Stefan asks for some time to do some recon. What the team doesn't know is that Stefan's main priority is saving Connor in order to get the vampire's cure for Elena.
Damon gives Stefan an hour to do some recon and then asks for Bonnie, "Where the hell is the wicked witch of the west?" To which Caroline responds, "She can't do magic." What the group doesn't know is that Bonnie is all the way at Whitmore College with Professor Shane in her quest to get her powers back. Shane manages to keep Bonnie from her friends, and out of harms way, by taking her cell phone away during their "therapy season."
Back in Mystic Falls, Elena and Damon head to Alaric's (Matt Davis) apartment in search of more weapons and a map of the tunnels that exist under the center of the town. There, they're met by Stefan, who along with Damon, tell Elena that she cannot help get the hostages for fear that Connor will find out she's a vampire.
Stefan tells his brother and girlfriend that Klaus is sending a hybrid through the front door of the Grill to distract Connor, and as expected, Damon disagrees. "Screw your plan, I'll kill Connor myself," he says as he heads for the door. But Stefan is too quick and he stabs him in the back with vervain, knocking him out. A shocked Elena stares at Stefan as he lays Damon on the couch and again insists that she's going to save her brother Jeremy. Stefan won't hear of it and tells her that he will save Jeremy.
Over at Tyler's house, tensions between girlfriend Caroline and sexy shewolf house guest Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) get a little high. Caroline suspects that something is up between her hybrid boyfriend and his wolfy friend, but doesn't know what. In the meantime, Tyler attempts to convince fellow hybrid Dean that he doesn't have to do Klaus' bidding. In a show of how un-sired he is, Tyler calls Klaus to show him up only to be threatened by the original vampire that he'll spill about his Appalachia "little secret." Using her sonic vampire ear, Caroline hears the whole conversation, confirming her suspicions.
At the Grill, Connor works tirelessly booby-trapping all the entrances hoping to kill as many vampires as he can. Unbeknownst to Connor, Stefan manages to get into the Grill and steer Matt and April out of danger. In the meantime, Klaus' hybrid walks in the front door, missing the trip wire but setting off a bomb of werewolf shrapnel, which of course doesn't kill him. However, Connor shoots him with buckshot that hollows out his chest and instantly kills him.
Making his way to the front of the restaurant, Stefan tries to talk some sense into Connor but to no avail. After some moving around, Jeremy inadvertently steps on a bomb sensor and is forced to stay still. Across town, Damon comes to only to discover that Stefan has taken his daylight ring, forcing him to stay indoors. Elena, who's worried sick after hearing the explosion from the first bomb, decides to head over to the Grill but not before getting some advice from Damon. "[Connor] doesn't know you're a vampire. So get as close as you can, then kill him," he says.
Elena marches off to the Grill and walks through the front door to plead with Connor. "Please don't hurt him," she says to him. "[Jeremy's] the only family that I have left." Instead, Connor tells Stefan that he will kill Jeremy in front of Elena. In a matter of seconds, Stefan rises from his hiding spot, Connor shoots, Elena attacks Connor, Jeremy is shot in the stomach, moves and sets off the bomb, and Stefan manages to grab him before he's killed.
As Elena pummels Connor, she's overtaken by the strong vampire hunter, but is saved by Stefan who grabs Connor and flees. Shocked, Elena runs to Jeremy and feeds him her blood to cure him of his bullet wound. Although she momentarily is overtaken by Jeremy's blood, Elena manages to control herself. She questions Jeremy about his connection to Connor and finds out that he can see Connor's hunter's mark and that the Salvatores have been keeping secrets from her.
Down in the tunnels, Stefan and Connor run into Damon, who is determined to kill Connor. Stefan orders Connor to flee and deals with Damon. However, Damon is still not over being somewhat betrayed by his brother and comes close to killing him until he fesses up his plan.
Meanwhile, Connor runs right into Elena, who is determined to keep her brother safe. She takes a bite into his neck, while telling him to "Stay the hell away from my brother." On his knees, Connor takes one last shot at Elena, narrowly missing her heart. Infuriated, Elena snaps his neck and kills him.
But the guilt of killing him gets too much for Elena, who takes his body to bury it. There she runs into the Salvatores and completely loses it. The two brothers later return home, where they agree to not tell Elena there may be a cure for her vampirism and vow to work together. Back at home, Elena's guilt reaches a new high, making her hallucinate blood throughout her house.
