Floyd Mayweather Jr. has no official opponent yet for his scheduled September 12 fight. There have been a lot of names mentioned but one name that the undefeated American boxer may steer and clear away from is Kazakhstan sensation Gennady Golovkin.
Golovkin is still undefeated so far but is a scary competitor considering the type of beating he renders to his opponents. Fact of the matter is that Golovkin has won most of his fights via knockout. He currently totes a 33-0 record, 30 of them via KO.
His last match was against Willie Monroe Jr., who turned out to be the latest victim under the KO-conscious boxer, stopping the American in the sixth round last weekend.
Though he has yet to defeat a superstar fighter, there are some who believe that a Golovkin vs. Mayweather set-to could be something worth watching. And since Mayweather had earlier suggested that he wants his last fight to be special, a match with the KO-seeking Golovkin could be one that ranks along that line.
But of course, Mayweather will be careful on who he faces. The match is said to be the final fight of his career despite some believing that it is not.
Recall that Mayweather did mention two names thus far — Andre Berto and Karim Mayfield — but the names don’t quite ring a bell when you talk about exiting in style.
Amir Khan has been the widely rumored bet to face off against Mayweather Jr. but such rapport has died down in the last couple of months. Khan is currently observing his annual Ramadan ritual but has assured everyone that he is up and ready if ever Mayweather does give him a call.
Between Golovkin and Khan, a safer route to protect Mayweather’s unblemished record could point towards the British boxer’s way.
Golovkin is on the rise and his punching power could pose a problem, if not threaten Floyd Jr., who obviously wants to keep that perfect record intact.
Not to take anything away from what Khan is capable of doing, Golovkin is pretty dangerous. Not only is there the lingering thought of losing via KO but the fact that Mayweather could get hurt if his defensive strategy does not hold up against the hard-punching fighter.
With a September bout looking more of a farewell tiff, Mayweather is looking to exit in style, undefeated and of course in one piece. Besides, Mayweather feels he is too smart for Golovkin although some could take ‘being smart’ in another way (like maybe avoiding him?).
The belief is that Golovkin may not likely be considered but as far as the Kazakh Destroyer is concerned, it hardly matters. All he wants to do is fight against anybody who would be willing to meet him in the ring.
If not Mayweather then who can Golovkin face next?
Golovkin may be keeping his eye out on the anticipated match between Miguel Cotto and Canelo ‘Saul’ Alvarez. From all indications it seems that Golovkin will have his eye on the winner of that fight.
