The comic book giant Marvel Comics has announced that it will base a comic book around its "Contest of Champions" video game. While in the past it has been the other way around with video games being based off of popular comic book story lines, the higher ups at Marvel believe that this experience could change on how comic book storylines are written.
According to CNET, Marvel has been closely working with video game designer Kabam to make sure that the story line of the comic book and video game match up to make sense to the fans of both media. The story will revolve around several of Marvel's most popular heroes, such as Spider-Man and Captain America, being kidnapped to fight the mysterious figure collector.
Realty Today states that by basing the comic book off the video game Marvel hopes to shed the negativity of basing another medium off a video game. There have been several movies in the past that have tried to make a good adaptation of a video game such as Jean Claude Van Damme's "Street Fighter the Movie" and "Super Mario Bros." However, neither was considered box office hits.
Lead writer for the comic, Al Ewing, claims that his team has thought of many intricate details for the comic that the average reader may not think of concerning themselves with. For example, "Contest of Champions" will be a fighting game, meaning one contestant will fight the other in one on one combat. According to Ewing his team even thought about where the other characters would be if they aren't fighting. These small but important details will help the story grow. Ewing shared, "As long as the team has the thought of making the best comic possible, nothing can go wrong."
Marvel has also has confirmed that new characters will debut in both the game and in the Marvel Universe. There has already been one character confirmed, named Guillotine, who is a female superhero who has a magical sword handed down through her family since the French Revolution. Kabam has helped conceive the character from initial character sketches, to even ideas for characters traits that have made it into the final character. One such idea was to have a skull attached to Guillotine's magical sword that will talk to her.
With a release date set for October, "Contest of Champions" will hopefully bring a welcomed change into the comic book universe. There has been no word yet on which gaming systems the game will be released on, but if history repeats itself for previous Marvel games it will more than likely be multi-platformed.
