The Android Lollipop 5.1 will roll out on the Moto X 1st Gen and Moto X 2nd Gen.

David Schuster, Motorola's Senior Director of Software Product Management, stated that the Android 5.1 soak testing is already being conducted for the two Moto X phones in various regions. The OS rollout is expected to begin in the third week of June 2015.

Phone Arena reported that soak testing usually means that the OS release is about to start for consumers. Schuster cited that the first generation Moto X (2013) soak testing has already started in Italy, Belgium, Australia, Netherlands, Hong Kong, Spain, Oman, India, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates and Singapore. He added that soak testing for the second generation Moto X (2014) has already begun for retail channels in Greece, Australia, Hong Kong, Belgium, Indonesia, Malaysia, Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, New Zealand, Poland, Sweden, Singapore, Denmark and Italy.

There are some users in certain regions who may have already received the update for the Android 5.1 Lollipop, but the large scale soak testing are expected to have the OS available for more users worldwide. Schuster indicated that if everything goes according to plan, the update should be available for both phone models in the next few weeks. Schuster also wrote that they already addressed an issue that they discovered in a previous soak test.

Motorola will be delaying the Android update for the Moto X (2014), wrote Schuster. There was a bug that they found during soak testing.

"I wanted to give an update on where we are with the Moto X (2nd Gen) soak testing. We ended up detecting an issue that we want to correct prior to moving to full deployment," Schuster wrote on Google Plus in May 2015.

Overall, users should expect to find the Android 5.1 Lollipop on both Moto X versions by the end of June or in the middle of July 2015.

Android Central reported that Moto X users who receive the Android 5.1 update should expect to find a number of feature upgrades and performance enhancements. The update fixed several bugs and made the OS more stable. Adjustments were made to the quick settings for added convenience to users. There are new APIs, HD voice and dual sim support in the latest update and screen pinning has been revamped. Added security features have also been introduced by Android 5.1 to protect users more. Volume and interruption sliders have been adjusted and there were new animation and notification enhancements.
