Once a year, we get to unleash the inner Homer Simpson inside us an feast on doughnut upon doughnut without having to pay a dime. This Friday, June 5 is that day as shops across the country take part in National Doughnut Day.
The event's history isn't as sweet as one would think. It began on the battlefields of France during World War I when the Salvation Army's "Doughnut Dollies" would hand out hundreds of coffee cups and doughnuts on a daily basis. Veterans still recollect burrowing into trenches as the delectable treats were handed out.
The pastries didn't gain much popularity in the United States until the early 1930s when New Yorker Adolph Levitt perfected his doughnut machines, earning him somewhere near $25 million a year. Soon they hit the World's Fair in Chicago, and received air time in a Clark Gable film. Just like in World War I, doughnuts became soldiers' go-to treats during World War II. They were an airy, cost-effective solution for both veterans and citizens surviving the Great Depression.
National Doughnut Day picked up steam in 1938 and hasn't lost traction since. Chicago's Salvation Army still hands out doughnuts on the first Friday in June, though they ask for small donations in return.
Let's take a look at some places taking part in the delectable holiday on June 5.
