Samsung's year so far has been one the South Korean electronics manufacturer can be proud of. Their flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S3, has sold incredibly well and finally gave the world its first legitimate iPhone 5 contender. Now, on top of being a best-selling phone, the Galaxy S3 has had its carbon footprints certified by UK-based Carbon Trust Certification.
The Samsung Galaxy Ace Duo also received carbon footprint certification.
"Yes, our customers want to own a great smartphone, but they also want to be responsible consumers, and the Galaxy S3 helps them do both. Measuring the carbon footprint helps us to understand the environmental impact of our mobile phones and identify where we can continue to improve. Samsung aims to calculate the carbon footprint for all of its mobile flagship devices," said Bill Skeates, Head of Sustainability for Samsung Electronics Europe on SamsungTomorrow.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Ace Duo were certified to the global standard PAS2050, which measure the carbon footprint of a device over its lifetime. The Samsung Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Note both had previously been certified as well.
The Galaxy S3 has a carbon footprint of up to 14 percent less than its predecessor thanks to a more efficient charger, and less emissions and raw materials used during its production.
Samsung also claims to be the first and only mobile phone manufacturer to have devices certified to PAS2050 by Carbon Trust Certification.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 is Samsung and T-Mobile's best-selling handset of all time, with worldwide sales of 20 million after just 100 days on the market. Samsung expects the smartphone to continue to do well and hit the 30 million mark by the end of the year.
