Things are not well in the Arenas household.
Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas is being sued by his longtime girlfriend, Laura Govan, claiming that Gilbert kicked her out of their mansion in Los Angeles and sold her engagement ring, worth $1 million.
TMZ reported that Govan, alleged that Gilbert "forcefully took" the engagement ring, which he gave her in 2008, then sold it without her consent. Now, Govan wants her share in the proceeds of the said ring. Govan also wants her share in the profits of the marijuana clinics that Gilbert owns.
Govan filed the case in court. She added that she and Gilbert are in the process of parting ways permanently. Based on the court documents, Gilbert and Laura started dating in 2002, before he made it big in the NBA and earned close to $200 million. Govan said that they did not have a wedding, but lived together as husband and wife, with Gilbert allegedly promising her that she will equally share in all his earnings beginning in 2003, as if they were legally married. The couple has four children together. According to the "Basketball Wives LA" star, Gilbert notified her to leave the premises of their home in 2014.
Arenas and Govan's relationship has been on and off in the past several years as reported by the Washington Post. On one occasion, Govan served Arenas with child support and custody papers during the halftime break of an NBA game. Arenas said that Govan receives $20,000 a month but announces to everyone that she is not getting any support. Arenas also sued Govan and the show producers of "Basketball Wives LA" in 2011 for trademark infringement, misappropriation of the star's likeness and false advertising.
Govan said about their relationship in 2011, in a report by Essence, "We plan to get married soon. When and where, I don't know yet. I feel like we're already married though, ten years, four kids later. People say he's a mess, and I'm a mess. You know what, we're each other's messes. Everybody has breakup and make-up moments. It just so happens that ours is out in the public. You learn to grow."
ESPN reported that Arenas played point guard in the NBA for 12 seasons. He was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in 2001 but spent most of his career with the Washington Wizards, where he garnered his most lucrative contracts. He last played with the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2011-2012 season before retiring.
RotoWorld reported that Arenas has been playing in China with the Shanghai Sharks since November 2012. He averaged 20.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.
