A Dallas court has sentenced Elizabeth Escarlona to 99 years in prison for gluing her 2-year-old daughter's hands to the wall and severely beating her in front of her siblings.
Escarlona, 23, was sentenced Friday for beating Jocelyn Cedillo so badly that she suffered bleeding in her brain, had a broken rib and was put into a coma.
"We're very happy with the judge's decision," Debbie Denmon, spokeswoman for the Dallas County district attorney's office, reported the LA Times.
Prosecutors were seeking 45 years, but the judge doubled that sentence.
The Times reports that Judge Larry Mitchell told Escarlona that this decision came down to the way she beat her daughter.
"The prosecutor said Elizabeth Escarlona wasn't sorry for what she did. She was sorry for herself, not the child she tortured," Denmon said. "Her children now have a chance to lead a productive life."
Escarlona will have to serve 30 years before she's eligible for parole.
Her attorney told the Times they do plan to appeal.
"I hit her, I kicked her constantly and she didn't deserve that," Escarlona said, the times reported. But, she added, "I want everybody to know that I'm not a monster. I love my kids."
Escarlona said she attacked the girl in September 2011 after she became frustrated with the child's "potty training issue."
Cadilla was found by her grandmother, Ofelia Escarlona, lying on the floor "taking shallow breathes."
Escarlona had called Ofelia to the house after the attack.
"I had my daughter in front of me, but she was not all there," Ofelia said in court earlier this week.
She picked Cadillo up off the floor and noticed she had soiled her underwear, the grandmother said. She changed Cadillo and took her to the hospital.
Escarlona is the mother of five children. Ofelia currently has custody of the kids.
