Updates about the latest gaming consoles and game titles are a hit online - players can't just get enough of them.

Those outside the world of gaming looking in may wonder why people fuss over the distinctions among PlayStation, Xbox, and Wii models out there. New information based on a survey may provide the answers to this.

"Infometrics guru Nielsen just published the results of an inquiry into why people are buying the latest game systems from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo," Time reported.

It shoud be noted, however, that it was not specified how many were surveyed, although it was revealed that those who owned consoles aged 13 and up were polled and that the data was "collected via consumer surveys using Nielsen's proprietary, high-quality online panel in the United States," GameSpot said.

Based on the results, which you can view here, it appears that the reasons vary for each console.

"For PS4 owners, the most important thing is 'better resolution,' followed by a Blu-ray player, the game library, and family preference," Polygon noted. It should also be noted that "faster processing power" took fourth place among PS4 owners.

"Xbox One owners cite brand as the top reason followed by 'innovative features,' system exclusives and 'fun-factor," the site added, with "faster processing power" taking third place.

"Wii U owners were focussed on fun-factor, children, value and older games," as well as "exclusive games/content," according to Polygon.

While the results do give insights to consumer preferences when it comes to gaming consoles, these also were considered "weirder than they appear at first," according to Time.

"What's "Blu-ray Player" doing as PS4 factor number two? The Xbox One's just as capable a Blu-ray system," the news source observed. "Is this telling us something about a Microsoft messaging failure? Or wait-isn't packaged media all but dead? Whether people are really watching scads of Blu-rays on their PS4s or this is just the psychological 'want the option' factor is unclear."

"'Game Library' is another head-scratcher," the Time article went on to point out. "The Xbox One's library is just as big and just as critically acclaimed as the PlayStation 4's, while neither system offers native backward compatibility. Is this indication of a preference for the kinds of exclusives Sony's system offers?"

"And looking across the way at Nintendo, what's the difference between 'Game Library' (PS4) and 'Exclusive Games/Content' (Wii U)?" it continued.

The same piece also picked on the resolution option, saying that "slight visual differences" shouldn't matter.

GameSpot took on this issue and "investigated" it to "see if gamers could really spot the difference between Xbox One and PS4 based on graphics."
