A couple of weeks ago, Nintendo confirmed that its new console, the Wii U, would not be compatible with games from its Gamecube system.
However, rumors are surfacing that gamers will be able to buy Gamecube games in the future to play on the Wii U using its Virtual console. Back in September, Nintendo President of America hinted that he would "love" for Gamecube games to appear on the Wii U.
This presents an interesting problem for many gamers. The Wii was backward compatible with the Gamecube so owners of such classics like Super Smash Bros. Melee, Resident Evil Remake, Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness, or Zelda: The Wind Waker could easily sell back their Gamecube consoles and continue playing their favorite titles on the Wii with Gamecube controllers.
But Gamecube games are virtually worth nothing and to sell them back would essentially reward them with little. According to ZoKnowsGaming, pricing for these games could range from $14.99 to $19.99. Gamers who still own the discs would not get anything near this rate if they tried to sell back their games. The pricing may be a bit high but seems to be right when one considers that Nintendo 64 games were costing $10 on the virtual console.
The Wii U is backward compatible with its last generation console the Wii. While there is no confirmation on whether the Gamecube controller will be supported by the system for such Wii games as Smash Bros. Brawl, the system does have its own Wii Pro Controller that will likely replace it for such titles.
The Virtual Console is an online service that Nintendo started offering with the Wii and DS in which gamers could purchase titles from older consoles and download them for play on the existing consoles. Titles from past generation consoles such as the Nintendo 64, Super NES, and NES consoles were available among others.
