UFC light heavyweight champ Jon "Bones" Jones did drug rehab for only one day.
In December 2014, Jones tested positive for the substance benzoylecgonine, the main metabolite in cocaine. The positive results, however, did not disqualify him to fight Daniel Cormier in January 2015 and Jones promised to check himself into rehab after his victory.
Yahoo Sports reported that Jones' mother, Camille Jones, said that Jones stayed in a drug rehabilitation center in New Mexico for only one night.
She stated in an exclusive WBNG interview, "I'm glad that this happened to Jon, this stopped him in his tracks, this let him know that he may need to change some friends, you know, because everyone is not for you for the best." She added, "So this is a good thing as far as our family is concerned, so we wasn't upset. Me and my husband considered it a blessing from God that our child was able to be helped and know that he need to stop and know that he needed the assistance to stop before it came to something worse."
Fox Sports wrote that Jones checked into rehab on January 6 then exited the facility the next day. Camille said that Jon continues to research and educate himself about his recent positive results and entering rehab, taking into consideration the fact that he puts his reputation and title at risk as one of the best pound-for-pound UFC fighters in the world.
Yahoo Sports in the same report wrote that there is a lingering question on whether Jones truly has a drug issue. Although he tested positive on December 4, 2014, he passed a second test conducted on December 18. His mother stated that the day before the December 4 test, Jon spent time with friends that he should not have been hanging out with, which could have explained the results.
Yahoo Sports added that Jones checking into drug rehab even for a short while can either mean that he has an existing drug abuse problem that he and his family intended to address or he was merely an occasion drug user, not an addict, who checked into rehab to make it seem as if he was actually getting treated. However, drug rehabilitation can never be done in one day, so it can be an attempt to improve his public relations after the positive findings.
Jon, at present, is keen on watching his two brothers play in the AFC championship on January 18 in Boston.
