Apple's decision to replace Google Maps with their in-house Apple Maps may have been more personal than practical. As users complain, Google has stated that it has a Google Maps app for the iOS 6 just waiting for Apple's approval. And now, proving that their mapping service is the superior of the two, Google is allowing users can now dive underneath the ocean using Google Maps.
That's right, underwater panoramas are now a thing.
Google's Brian McClendon, VP of Google Maps and Earth, wrote in a post on the official Google blog:
"Today we're adding the very first underwater panoramic images to Google Maps, the next step in our quest to provide people with the most comprehensive, accurate and usable map of the world. With these vibrant and stunning photos you don't have to be a scuba diver-or even know how to swim-to explore and experience six of the ocean's most incredible living coral reefs. "
Google Maps is offering underwater view of the Great Barrier Reef, the Philippines, and Hawaii.
The company is teaming up with The Catlin Seaview Survey and their special underwater camera, the SVII, to provide the images.
It seems kind of funny that as Apple's mapping system struggles with public transportation and clouds, that Google would make underwater imaging available, but it proves that puffing out your chest might not be the best strategy in technology.
