This fall will be a tough one for smartphone buyers, albeit in a good way. With more technically sound choices than ever before, consumers will have to choose between the best operating systems, and one of the choices will surely come down to Windows vs. Apple.

Enter Apple's iPhone 5 and the Nokia Lumia 920.

The Apple iPhone 5 can claim to be the most anticipated consumer electronics device of all time. After months of speculation, Apple finally revealed the next-gen handset on September 12, with pre-orders beginning two days later, and a launch date of September 21.

The new iPhone sports a bigger display size that makes the phone taller, but not wider, and will finally allow for 16:9 viewing. At 4 inches, the display is up from the previous iPhone's 3.5-inch screen. The new iPhone also comes with Apple's new mobile operating system, iOS 6 , which gets rid of Google Maps as its primary navigation app and replaces it with the new Apple Maps (which is apparently horrible in urban areas).

The iPhone 5 also features an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera.

Apple's iPhone 5 is also the first 4G LTE iPhone. It will start at $199 for the 16GB model, then bump up to $299 and $399 for the 32GB nd 64GB versions respectively. Carriers AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint are the only ones currently offering the phone. An unlocked version should follow soon.

Nokia's Lumia 920 will be the flagship device sporting the new Windows 8 mobile operating system. It will feature a larger 4.5-inch display and come with a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor. It will also have an impressive 8.7-megapixel rear-facing camera with a 3264X2448 resolution and a secondary camera with a 1280X960 resolution.

The Windows 8 handset will also have Nokia's mapping system, which Nokia claims is superior thanks to their in-house involvement.

Verizon has been linked to the Nokia Lumia 920, and there is a good chance AT&T will also offer the phone.
