If you're an HTC One X smartphone owner, you're no doubt a little angry that all the news about the Galaxy S3 and iPhone has taken away from what was (and arguably still is) the best Android phone out there. Luckily, reports are surfacing that your device will be receiving an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update as soon as October, according to a report from Modaco.
"If you're using a generic device you don't have too long to wait... HTC will be starting the rollout in October for generic devices with rollout to all devices (including operator branded units) set for completion before Christmas (subject to operator / Google approvals etc. of course)," writes Modaco.
Keep in mind that Android release dates are usually given for SIM-free, unlocked phones (the generic device referred to by the Modaco report). Those who purchased the HTC One X through a carrier will still have to wait for their carrier to first approve, then distribute the update to phones. This usually leads to staggered release dates across carriers. More likely than not, however, the update should be fully rolled out by the end of 2012, if only to keep HTC competitive against rival Android phone maker Samsung and Apple's iPhone 5.
Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is not a major overhaul to the Android operating system, but will introduce new features that will keep it competitive against Apple's recently-released iOS 6 mobile operating system. It will introduce a smoother interface, improved NFC connectivity, as well as Google's own Siri-like voice assistant, Google Now.
HTC is also planning on releasing a One X+ model that should come preloaded with Jelly Bean later this year.
