In preparations for next year's summer, Warner Brothers announced Wednesday that they will be converting Guillermo del Toro's new film "Pacific Rim" to 3D.
The film, which is budgeted at $200 million, was to have been released in 2D as Del Toro stated "the movie would not be 3D, even though studios execs wanted the format."
The news comes as a surprise because back in July, Del Toro stated on "Collider.com" that "There was a discussion that took a long time to overcome and that was to make the movie 3D." He stated "I didn't want to make the movie 3D because when you have something big ... to force the 3D effect on robots and monsters that are supposed to be [big], you are making them miniaturized, you are making them human scale. I knew that 3D effects sounded like a good idea, but it was going to be counter."
"Pacific Rim" tells the story of humans who are deployed to fight off aliens threatening Earth's existence, using giant robots. "Rim" stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day and Ron Perlman.
"Pacific Rim" is the first project completely produced by Legendary Pictures, which finances many Warner Bros movies. Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni of Legendary are producers alongside Mary Parent and Del Toro.
The highly anticipated film by Academy Award nominee Del Toro marks his return to the director's chair since 2008's "Hellboy 2: The Golden Army."
In addition to "Pacific Rim", Del Toro will be busy next year with the release of "Mama" a film he produced."Mama" tells the story of Annabel and Lucas who are faced with the challenge of raising Lucas' young nieces that were left alone in the forest for 5 years.
"Mama" hits theaters January 18, 2013 and will be released by Universal.
"Pacific Rim" hits theaters July 12, 2013.
