Apple's September 12 event unveiled the new iPhone 5, a new iPod Nano, and the new iPod Touch. The iPod Touch has always been basically the same as the iPhone, without its calling capabilities and it looks like Apple will continue the trend.
Both the iPhone 5 and iPod Touch are available for pre-ordering on Friday, September 14.
The new iPod Touch will feature a 4-inch Retina display, the same as the iPhone 5. The display resolution is 1136X640, which gives it a 326 pixels per inch count. It will run iOS 6, and will have access to the same Apple app store that the iPhone 5 utilizes. This means that it will have the same features such as Siri and Apple Maps that iPhone 5 users enjoy.
The iPhone 5, however, will start at $199 with a two-year contract while the iPod Touch starts at $299 for the 32GB model and will cost $399 for the 64GB model.
Apple is really playing up the new iPod Touch's camera. While not as powerful as the iPhone 5's 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, the iPod Touch will still sport a respectable 5-megapixel rear-facing iSight camera that can record in 1080p.
The new iPod Touch's front-facing camera, however, is 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera for 720p FaceTime HD.Apple is also including an attachable wrist strap to really push the digital-camera aspect of the device. The iPod Touch will come with same processor that the iPhone 4S had, a dual-core A5 chip.
The latest iPod iteration will utilize the new, smaller 9-pin 'Lightning' dock, just like the new iPhone 5.
In the end, the new iPod Touch looks like it will fulfill its role as an iPhone without any of the phone.
