This year brought "Power Rangers" fans the good news that the popular TV series will be made into yet another movie, one that executive producer Roberto Orci hinted would not be a reboot but a "continuity," as noted by Collider.
"It's got a continuity within the world. I can't tell you what, but it does have a continuity," he was quoted as saying in July.
When asked whether there will be appearances from the original cast members, Orci appeared to affirm this possibility.
"Of course. That's something we want to rely on the Saban group to tell us. They have a lot of internal knowledge of their franchise and we're just learning now. We've seen it only as fans, but they actually know it inside and out, so I'd love to know what fans want to see," Orci answered.
Unfortunately, later in September this year, Orci bowed out of the film project as it reportedly conflicted with the production schedule of "Star Trek," which Orci is directing.
With this particular turn of event, it appears that fans will continue to be kept in the dark regarding the movie's cast, plot, and production progress. This, however, does not stop us from continually speculating on how the film will pan out and who will be included in the project. Here's our list of villains that may very well be featured in the "Power Rangers" movie:
Rita Repulsa
Rumor has it that Meryl Streep will be playing Rita Repulsa - a tidbit that has yet to be confirmed by the makers of the film, KpopStarz noted. It's no surprise that this villain has been tipped to be included in the movie as she's "iconic of the series," as Comic Vine puts it.
"When you watch the old Mighty Morphin' episodes, the first thing you hear before that kickass rock song is her shrill voice proclaiming her intentions to conquer our planet," the site recalled.
Lord Zedd
He's Rita Repulsa's husband and is a classic villain in the "Power Rangers" story. "He has an amazing design that was so frightening, the character actually had to be toned down because adults found him too scary," Comic Vine said. "Zedd's methods were far more sinister, taking an item that had some sort of value to the rangers, like an instrument or a family heirloom and twisting it into an evil monster."
Ivan Ooze
This villain appeared in "Power Rangers: The Movie" and is known for his signature purple ooze. He's been sealed by Zordon 6,000 years ago but was unleashed by Rita and Lord Zedd. He might be making a comeback in the next film as he already is recognizable to those new to the "Power Rangers" world and may serve as an "anchor" for that continuity Orci mentioned.
Astronema
She appeared in the "Power Rangers in Space" series and is described as a "truly evil" villain."Even when she helped the Rangers try and find Zordon, she stood in a gray area, making the viewer unsure of her intentions or if she was leading them into a trap," thatguywiththeglasses.com observed.
She's an interesting character that actually has a backstory - a rarity among villains in the series. This makes her a viable candidate for inclusion in the upcoming movie.
The Psycho Rangers
These villains are hard to beat, as they "refuse to stay down, surviving as ghosts and reconstituting themselves with one of Astronema's machines for another crack at the Rangers," Comic Vine said. Plus, their skills and capabilities are also equal, or even stronger, than their heroic counterparts, making this bad squad a great match for the Rangers, enhancing the "Power Rangers" cinematic experience.
Which villain do you think should be included in the 2016 "Power Rangers" movie?
