While Apple and Samsung have been competing for superb aesthetics and state-of-the-art technical features of their latest smartphones, Chinese phonemakers seem to have other things in mind.
For them, it appears to be a battle on who can manufacture the thinnest or slimmest smartphone.
This notion seems to have been confirmed when Chinese phone manufacturer Oppo Electronics officially laid claim to the world's slimmest phone on October 29 with its latest Oppo R5 model, beating fellow Chinese phonemaker Gionee for the record, cites Engadget.
Oppo R5 pulled the rug out from Gionee's Elife 5.1 which only got the title for the world's thinnest phone on October 1, as reported by the Malaymail Online.
At 4.85 mm thick, the Oppo R5 handily beat Gionee's Elife 5.1 which has a thickness of 5.15 mm, notes Engadget.
Oppo has not disclosed the official release date for the world's slimmest phone but a December launch is very likely. The company has already revealed that Oppo R5 would be priced at $499, states GSM Arena.
Together with the formal announcement of the Oppo R5, the company also unveiled the Oppo N3, which is to become Oppo Electronics flagship cameraphone, reports Forbes.
Specs and Features
GSM Arena says that Oppo R5 features a 5.2-inch AMOLED touch screen with a 1080p resolution, enabling Oppo to boast for the best brightness, lowest reflectivity, and highly accurate colors.
The phone is powered by a 1.5GHz octa-core Cortex-A53 processor on a Snapdragon 615, Qualcomm's mid-range octa-core chipset, paired with an Adreno 405GPU and a 2GB RAM, points out AEG India.
Oppo R5, which weighs only 155 grams, shall also run on Android 4.4 operating system. With a 16GB internal storage, the world's thinnest phone comes with a 2000 mAh Li-Polymer battery, added the report
What makes the Oppo R5 unique in terms of battery power is that it features VOOC charging technology allowing for rapid charging. AEG India said that the battery can be charged from 9% to 75% in just 30 minutes.
Oppo R5 has a 5-megapixel front facing and 13-megapixel rear facing camera, but both with a 2.0 aperture.
The new camera app that comes with the smartphone allows users greater freedom of customization through the installation of desired features as plug-ins, says Engadget.
Plug-ins included "HD Picture," which is capable of enhancing images up to 64 megapixels, "Slow Shutter," "Beautify," "Professional," "Super Macro," "GIF mode," and several others, which are all features of the Oppo N3, added Engadget.
The Oppo N3, on the other hand, is expected to draw the attention of photography enthusiasts with its 16-megapixel mounted on a 206-degree rotating motorized mount, Forbes added.
